Largemouth Bass (The Freshwater Angler) |
Don Oster |
 |
If
you want to buy one great book about bass fishing, buy this one.
It's great. It goes into all the specifics of how to fish
all the key baits, different types of water, different seasons,
etc. I've learned a great deal from this book. It's
easy to read, has the BEST pictures I've ever seen of bass in
natural habitat (excellent underwater shots showing bass relating
to cover and structure naturally). Get it! |

An Angler's Guide to Bass Patterns: Productive Methods, Places and
Times (Bass Series Library, No 8) |
Larry Larsen |
 |
I've gotten through about 1/3 of this title, and there's some good
information in it. He does focus on some interesting things
that other titles have not discussed, such as boat control, etc.
However, I'm finding it a bit difficult to read, unfortunately. |

Bass Master Shaw Grigsby- Notes on Fishing and Life |
Shaw Grigsby and Robert Coram |
 |
I absolutely LOVED this book.
The way Shaw interweaves his fishing career with that of his
relationship with his dad was very touching. Shaw does a
great job of communicating the basics - which if executed
consistently, will put fish in the boat! Grigsby seems like
a really nice person, and someone I'd like to know, and spend a
day on the water with. A couple of important things to learn
from him: Respect another man's water, and respect another
man's fish. Period. 'Nuff said. Get this one! |

JJay Yelas - A
Champion's Journey of Faith, Family, and Fishing, an Autobiography |
Jay Yelas |
 |
I just finished reading Jay's
book, so let me first tell you what it is not. It is not a
book about how to catch more fish - technique, gear, finding fish,
etc. Don't buy this book expecting to learn all the things
that Jay has learned on the water in his nearly twenty years of
fishing professionally. Rather, the book is a testimony to
how becoming a devout Christian has changed his approach to life,
and that his spiritual journey to becoming more "Christ-like" has
resulted in the maturity, strength, and perspective he required to
reach the pinnacle of the fishing world. Some may find his
continual quoting of scripture a bit tiresome, while others will
feel right at home. However, one chapter of his book really
hit home with me - a chapter in which he explains that peace
and rhythm are two of the most important elements in fishing.
I believe him, and have found that when I have neither of these
things in my "box" with me when I fish, I don't catch very
much.... Jay is one of the best fishermen in the world today, and
this book should no go ignored. |

Bass Wisdom |

Haven't read this one yet, but I'll get to it soon! |

Denny Brauer's Jig Fishing Secrets |
Denny Brauer with Monte Burch |
 |
This is a great book, packed with excellent information from the
king of the Jig. I've already started catching fish
consistently on a jig since I started reading this book, and I bet
I catch my biggest fish of the year this year on a jig! I'll
let you know. Watch my
fishing journal
page for information and updates! |

Denny Brauer's Winning Tournament Tactics |
Denny Brauer with Monte Burch |
 |
I just recently bought this
book, and after skimming it, I'm really excited about reading it.
I just have to make the time. It's more comprehensive than
his "Jig Fishing Secrets" title, but it appears a little older.
Stay tuned. After
reading this book, I've decided that it's actually BETTER than the
"secrets" title...although both are great! I really like the
specific tournament advice, such as "patterning your competitors".
Also, his discussion regarding what it takes be a successful
tournament angler at the highest levels was very interesting.
I really like this book. Get it. Also note, he wrote
this book BEFORE he won the Classic... |

Kevin Van Dam's Bass Strategies- A Handbook for All Anglers |
Kevin Van Dam and Louie Stout |
 |
Very good book. I especially like Van Dam's attention to
detail around hook sharpness, boat organization, crankbait depths,
and line strengths and weaknesses. I've read his other book
as well, and this is the better of the two... |
|
Kevin Van Dam - Secrets of a
Champion |
Kevin Van Dam and Louie Stout |
 |
This book "gets into the
weeds", and provides really interesting, specific advice for
working certain baits, customizing baits, and other details.
Kevin is a very meticulous fisherman, and you can learn a lot from
his acute attention to details. For example, did you know
that you can customize a spinnerbait by changing the "cupping" of
the blades??? The book contains a "cast by cast" review of
his win at the classic in Louisiana a few years ago, and
exposition that I found less than stellar, but that should not
prevent you from purchasing this book and learning from the guy
who defined the term "power fishing". |

Knowing Bass- The Scientific Approach to Catching More Fish |
Keith A. Jones |
 |
This is a very cool book, if you want to understand the anatomy
and physiology of the Black Bass. It can get a bit
technical for some, but this guy really knows his stuff, and does
a great job of applying the technical information to fishing
strategies, colors, techniques, etc. Cool information - stay
away from DEET (bug spray) when you are fishing, and don't put
fish in the livewell unless you absolutely have to. The
livewell is a dangerous place for bass... |

Monte Burch's Black Bass Basics- Techniques for Largemouth,
Smallmouth, Kentuckies |
Monte Burch |
 |
Good general read. The basics. |
|
The Bass Angler's Almanac- More Than 650 Tips and Tactics |
John Weiss |
 |
This is an OK book, but unfortunately, all those tips are actually
paragraphs that were numbered after the book was written.
There's good information, if you can get past the format gimmick. |
|
The Field & Stream Bass Fishing Handbook (Field & Stream Hunting
and Fishing Library) |
Bill Dance and Mark Sosin |
 |
Very interesting book. Focuses more on fishing styles than
"secrets". Most interesting information includes a high
emphasis on fishing deep cause "that's where the bass spend most
of their time....in deep water!". Bank pounders beware!
Lots of discussion on how and where to fish structure and creek
channel bends |

Advanced Bass Fishing (The Hunting & Fishing
Library) |
Dick Sternberg, Cy Decosse Inc
|
 |
Really great book that uses illustrations and pictures
beautifully, and focuses in on how fish key tactics. Highly
recommended. |
