My father, Jack J. Campanella was born in Brooklyn, USA on July 24,1938 to Sam and Dorothy Campanella. He was raised in Geretsen Beach with his sister Frances. Growing up, you might have seen him in Coney Island, eating a Nathan's hotdog, or swinging from a rope underneath the Belt Parkway bridge. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School, and upon graduation, joined the Navy and served as an aircraft mechanic based at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn. In July 1963, he married my mother Iris and had three sons, Mark S, Steven G, and Daniel J. Jack started his career in services working as a locksmith for Diebold Corporation doing service calls, and eventually worked his way up to being a salesman for a number of companies in the banking industry. Eventually, he was successful enough to start a number of general contracting businesses focused on retail banking - namely J. Rosario Corp (named after his father), and later BancSafe Inc. He died in 1987 of a heart attack while in the midst of making BancSafe an incredible success. Jack was a devoted husband and father, spending a great deal of time with each of his sons before it was fashionable to do so. He taught us how to play baseball, archery, and how to fish. I have wonderful memories of exciting deep-sea fishing trips where we would catch flounder, codfish, mackerel, and the elusive "boogfish" (attracted with a can of dog food). Near the end of his life, in addition to working hard to make his businesses a success, he enjoyed camping and fishing with his youngest son Danny in north western New Jersey. My father is terribly missed by Iris, his wife of nearly 25 years, his sons, his sister Frances, and her sons Keith and Scott, and his great friends. |
